Rötspitze

From the gentle Röttal valley to the icy summit: one of the most beautiful high peaks in the Ahrntal

From Kasern (1,595 m), follow trail no. 11 at all times. First, descend briefly to the stream, then ascend through forest to the bridge over the Rötbach. Continue along trail 11, passing remnants of the old mining sites, and climb moderately to the Outer Rötalm (Äußere Rötalm, 2,116 m; refreshments available).

From the hut, enjoy a level hike into the Röttal valley, then a moderate ascent to the Lenkjöchl Hut (Lenkjöchlhütte, 2,590 m) near the pass into the Windtal (from Kasern approx. 3–3:30 hrs); overnight stay possible.

From the hut, descend a few steps to the Lenkjöchl, then follow an unmarked but good path along the grassy southern slope. Continue easily over rocky terrain and blocks up to the glacier. Climb steeply to the shoulder-like Kleine Rötspitze (3,290 m).

From there, follow the almost level, occasionally snow-covered ridge southwestward to the base of the Rötspitze. Ascend the rocky ridge—initially broad, narrowing towards the top—mostly on faint paths, stable blocks, and solid rock. Some sections are quite exposed, others require scrambling and climbing (grade I–II). The upper section consists of somewhat loose but manageable rock. From the hut, allow about 3 hours to reach the summit (3,495 m).

Descent: Return via the same route. Alternatively, descend eastward through the Windtal valley to Heiliggeist, then hike back to Kasern along the old valley trail.
