Großer Moosstock
Panoramic summit with a stunning view
Drive from Sand in Taufers up to Ahornach (1,334 m) and continue along the farm road to the parking area near the Gasteigerhof (approx. 1,570 m). From there, follow trail no. 10B on foot through the forest, ascending on the old footpath to a scenic clearing with alpine huts known as the “Schlafhäuser” and on to the uppermost hut (2,010 m; about 2 hours from Ahornach).
Continue on trail 10B, following the sign for Moosstock, through a forest of stone pines up to the timberline. The trail now leads through open terrain — sometimes steep, sometimes more moderate — toward the rocky southwest flank. A short section of easy climbing (with one fixed rope) brings you to a broad shoulder (approx. 2,800 m). Just below, on the northern side, lies the small Moosstocksee.
From the shoulder, traverse right over rocky slopes to the base of the summit ridge, then follow the markings, again with short sections of easy scrambling, up to the summit cross (3,059 m). Total ascent time: about 4 hours from the starting point.
Descent: Return via the same route (approx. 3 hours).
